DANBURY, Conn. - Sophomore center
Marcel Henry (Yonkers, N.Y.) notched a game-high 18 points while rookies
Avery Taitt-Christina (Queens, N.Y.) and
Jaeden Bull (Wilmington, Del.) provided a punch off the bench with 13 and 12, respectively, to lead the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball squad to a 91-68 win over visiting Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference contest at Feldman Arena on Thursday evening.
Four players netted double figures for the Anchormen but they connected on just 38 percent of their shots from the floor, while the hosts buried a blistering 56 percent. Once again, the Wolves defeated their opponent by smothering them with a ferocious defensive effort. WestConn forced 27 turnovers while being unselfish with their hoops, finishing with 24 assists. The hosts also dominated the interior with 44 points in the paint.
RIC jumped out to an early 8-4 lead and it appeared it would be a hard-fought battle in the early going. But the Wolves quickly countered when Bull sank a short jumper to knot the count at 8-8. Moments later, Taitt-Christina stroked another midrange shot and WestConn would not look back the rest of the way. They extended the advantage to 47-27 at the break. They captured their largest lead late in the second half when rookie
Anthony Simpson (Simsbury, Conn.) scored in close off a feed from Taitt-Christina, widening the gap to 29.Â
With the victory, WestConn improved to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in league play, while the Anchormen sank to 7-6 and 3-2. The Wolves return to action when they head to UMass Dartmouth for another LEC matchup on Saturday at 3 p.m.
