DARTMOUTH, Mass - Six different players tallied double figures in scoring as the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team downed host UMass Dartmouth, 98-86, in a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore center
Marcel Henry (Yonkers, N.Y.) led the way with 18 points, while classmate forward
Nick Boyce (Jamaica, N.Y.) added 17.
Nothing could stop the Wolves as they shot a blistering 58 percent (34-of-59) from the floor which included 9-of-16 from three-point territory. The WestConn bench also outscored the UMass Dartmouth reserves, 42-11.Â
The hosts roared out of the gate to snag a 22-12 advantage when Camden Dichiara connected on a trifecta. But the visitors retaliated with a run that would put them in control the rest of the way. Rookie guard
Avery Taitt-Christina put the finishing touches on a monstrous surge when he drained a shot from beyond-the-arc, giving WestConn a 36-30 lead late in the first half. They would remain ahead, 45-43, at the break.
The Corsairs kept it close for much of the second half before the Wolves cemented the victory. Ryan Flauto sank a pair of free throws cutting into the WestConn lead, 61-59, with just under 12 minutes remaining. But the visitors put together yet another run en route to a 15-point advantage when sophomore guard
Nicholas Moore (Buffalo, N.Y) knocked down two from the stripe. The Wolves would coast down the stretch.
With the win, WestConn improved to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in league play, while the Corsairs dropped to 8-6 and 2-3. The Wolves return to the court when they host LEC rival Keene State on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
