WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -
Fatmata Barrie (Staten Island, N.Y.) and
Sara Macary (Naugatuck, Conn.) carried the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team to a 57-54 Little East Conference (LEC) win over nearby Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday. The Wolves improved to 8-11 overall and 3-7 in the league, while the Warriors fell to 7-11 and 4-5. Barrie notched third double-double this season with 11 rebounds and 16 points, while Macary put up 22 points.
The Wolves opened up the scoring with a defensive board and layup in the paint by Macary for the 2-0 lead in the first quarter. The teams traded baskets to keep it close but seven points by Barrie and two by Macary ignited WestConn's edge over Eastern in the period for an eight-point advantage. The visitors maintained their lead throughout the remainder of the half thanks to three-point buckets by
Malaysia Dingle (Brockton, Mass.) and
Leana Heitmann (East Syracuse, N.Y.). With three minutes remaining in the third, Maddie Topa evened the score to 42, but Macary drew the foul a minute later to regain the Wolves' lead for the remainder of regulation. In the second half, Macary added 12 points and Barrie contributed seven more.
WestConn remains on the road as they face Plymouth State University on January 31 for a noon tip-off.
