PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior forward
Leana Heitmann (E. Syracuse, N.Y.) tallied a team-high 14 points to go along with a game-high four steals but it wasn't enough as the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell at Plymouth State University, 62-52, in a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Foley Gym. Sophomore forward
Fatmata Barrie (Staten Island, N.Y.) also came off the bench and hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds, while senior forward
Sara Macary (Naugatuck, Conn.) chipped in with 12 points.
Four players notched double figures in scoring for the Panthers. Hailey Malozzi led the way with a game-high 19 while Ellie Cox contributed 14 and a game-high three blocks. The hosts canned 41 percent of their shots from the floor while the visitors connected at just a 31 percent clip which proved to be the difference maker. Plymouth State also earned 25 points off turnovers, while WestConn was held to 12.
The Wolves held a 10-8 advantage to wrap up the opening quarter when Heitmann cruised in for a layup. They stretched the advantage to six when Barrie sank a pair of shots from the stripe just before halftime to make it 28-22. But the hosts battled back in the second half. They would seize the lead and pull ahead by eight before the visitors answered to shrink the margin to 44-42 heading into the final stanza when Macary sank a shot from inside the paint. But the fourth was all Plymouth State as they stretched the advantage to as many as 16 when Cox converted a close range shot with 1:02 remaining before the contest closed out at 62-52.
With the loss, the Wolves sank to 8-12 overall and 3-8 in LEC play, while the Panthers improved to 10-10 and 3-8. WestConn returns to action when they host UMass Boston in yet another league battle on Wednesday. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m.
