DANBURY, Conn. - Senior forward
Leana Heitmann (East Syracuse, N.Y.) hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds but the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell to the University of Southern Maine, 82-54, in a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday afternooon.
With the loss, the Wolves dropped to 7-11 overall and 2-7 in league play, while the Huskies improved to 17-1 and 9-1. Heitmann and sophomore forward
Fatmata Barrie (Staten Island, N.Y.) paced the hosts with seven points apiece. Jaycie Christopher led the visitors with a double-double on game-highs of 25 points and 13 boards. Lucy Wiles chipped in with 19 points and a game-high five steals.
Southern Maine used its red-hot shooting to jump out to a 26-6 first quarter lead. The Wolves closed the deficit to 11 points when Heitmann sank a midrange jumper. But the Huskies retaliated with another run to regain its 20-point gap at halftime. They would cruise through the second half as the Wolves were unable to stage a rally.
WestConn returns to action when they head to LEC archrival Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
