DANBURY, Conn. - Trailing 2-0 heading into the third period, the Western Connecticut State University men's hockey team rallied to even the count at 2-2 before eventually being edged by UMass Dartmouth, 3-2, in a Little East Conference battle on Saturday afternoon at Danbury Ice Arena. After notching the equalizer, the Corsairs countered quickly to seize the 3-2 advantage midway through the final stanza. The Wolves found the back of the net but it was just one second after the final buzzer, giving the visitors the win.
The visitors broke the ice with less than 10 seconds to go in the opening period when Kailin Chen ripped a wrister into the top corner on a power play. They widened the gap to 2-0 in the second when Chris Cardillo tickled the twine.Â
The Wolves rally started 7:49 into the final period when rookie forward
Tyler Gobel fired a shot past the Corsair's netminder, assisted by classmate forward
Scott McNulty (Williamstown, N.J.) and classmate
Francis Rose (Clarkston, Mich.). Moments later, first-year forward
Marshall Curri (New Canaan, Conn.) netted a power play marker courtesy of passing from classmate
Matthew Donegan (Medford, N.J.) and
Connor Loerzel (Gads Hill, Ontario). But UMass Dartmouth was able to answer, shortly thereafter, regaining a 3-2 lead when Chen canned his second of the game on the power play.Â
With the loss, the Wolves fell to 1-13 overall and 0-7 in league play while the Corsairs improved to 8-5 and 3-2. WestConn returns to the ice at Vermont State University Castleton on Friday at 7 p.m.
