DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Despite a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds from senior forward
Sara Macary (Naugatuck, Conn.), the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball squad dropped a 69-56 decision on the road to UMass Dartmouth in a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams had difficulty shooting the rock for much of the contest. But the Corsairs managed to connect on nine shots from three-point range while the Wolves knocked down just a pair.Â
Yasmine Santos led the charge for the Corsairs, finishing with a game-high 23 points to go along with nine boards. Melanie DeMeo chipped in with 17 points which included a trio of trifectas.Â
After a close first quarter, UMass Dartmouth pulled ahead by 17 in the second when Cristina Negron sank a shot from beyond-the-arc. The hosts would hold a 34-20 lead at halftime.
WestConn sliced the gap to single digits when sophomore guard
Gianna Castellano (East Haven, Conn.) stole the ball and scurried in for a layup. However, the Corsaoirs countered quickly and rebuilt the cushion up to 18 late in the third. The Wolves were unable to stage a comeback in the fourth.
With the loss, WestConn dropped to 5-9 overall and 1-5 in LEC play, while UMass Dartmouth improved to 5-9 and 2-3. The Wolves return to the court when they host Keene State on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
