FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - Senior
Sydney Slupatchuk (New Milford, Conn.), junior
Julia Stoliker (Red Hook, NY) and rookie
Hallie Robillard (Middletown, Conn.) each notched double figures in kills with 13, 12 and 11 respectively, but it wasn't enough as the Western Connecticut State University women's volleyball squad suffered a heartbreaking 3-1 (11-25, 25-22, 25-20, 27-25) loss at non-conference foe Farmingdale State University on Thursday evening. Senior setter
Maggie Ferguson (Southbury, Conn.) chipped in with a match-high 48 assists for the Wolves.
With the opening set knotted at 6-6, WestConn reeled off a monstrous run to move ahead 24-8. Stoliker put the finishing touches on the flurry off a feed from Ferguson before eventually claiming the set. However, the Rams retaliated to seize a 14-9 advantage in the second frame. The Wolves clawed their way back into it and would capture a 22-21 lead when Robillard smashed a shot to the floor. But the hosts countered with a 4-0 spurt to steal the set.Â
The third set was neck-and-neck most of the way until the Rams outlasted the Wolves following an 18-18 count. The fourth stanza was a similar story. WestConn pulled ahead 21-17 when Ferguson smacked a kill but the Rams answered and were able to hold off the visitors to seal the match when Alyssa Conzatti nailed the game-winner. Samantha Russo led Farmingdale with a match-high 17 kills while committing just three errors.Â
With the loss, WestConn fell to 0-2 overall while the Rams improved to 3-1. The Wolves will look to break into the win column when they host a tri-match on Saturday against Clark and Rivier. Play begins at Noon.
