DANBURY, Conn. - Senior midfielder
Hannah Blacher (Allendale, N.J.) tallied the lone goal of the game midway through the first half to give the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team a thrilling 1-0 victory over visting non-conference opponent Worcester State University on Tuesday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.
With the win, the Wolves have now won six of their last seven contests, improving to 7-4-1 overall while the Lancers fell to 6-3-1.
The hosts outshot the visitors by a slim 12-7 margin while also holding the advantage in corner kick attempts, 6-2. WestConn came out firing on all cylinders as sophomore forward
Shannon Anderson (New Milford, Conn.) drilled a shot off the crossbar just 1:26 into the game. The Wolves finally broke through when Blacher knocked a shot that deflected off the goalie and trickled just over the goal line in the 29th minute.
WestConn did not take its foot off the gas in the second stanza. They continued to apply pressure while keeping the Lancers away from their own goal. Junior goalkeeper
Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) earned the win and stopped five shots for the hosts, while junior Ella Gumienny (Douglas, Mass.) took the loss and notched three saves for Worcester State.
WestConn returns to the field when they host Little East Conference rival UMass Dartmouth on Saturday at 1 p.m.
