DANBURY, Conn. — To open Little East Conference (LEC) action,
Miah Ruiz (New Fairfield, Conn.) tabbed three points as the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team routed the visiting UMass-Dartmouth Corsairs, 4-1, at the Westside Athletic Complex on Saturday. The Wolves moved to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the league, while Dartmouth fell to 1-8 and 0-2.
At 6:50 in the first quarter, Ruiz netted the first goal of the game for the Wolves off a foul by the Corsairs that allowed WestConn to regain possession of the ball.
After a breakaway run by Sam King and 47 seconds remaining in the first,
Jayne Hughes (Trumbull, Conn.) denied Dartmouth the shot that could have potentially knotted the game. However, Arlene Johnson managed to connect for a game-tying goal eight minutes into the second.
Alyssa Montalvo (Holbrook, N.Y.) inserted a penalty corner for WestConn with eight seconds before halftime as
Jaelyn Moulton (Stafford Springs, Conn.) found the ball for a shot in front of the net, but Corsairs' goalkeeper Shane Cueman kicked it away. Montalvo rejoined the offense for the tip-in off the denial by the goalie to put the Wolves up, 2-1. WestConn had another goal with seconds remaining in the third period as
Reagan Schoen's (Newtown, Conn.) shot was saved before her younger sister
Ellenoire Schoen (Newtown, Conn.) recovered the ball for another Wolves goal with 10 seconds on the clock.
A little over a minute into the final quarter,
Reagan Schoen put the Wolves up, 4-1, with the assist from Ruiz and another penalty corner inserted by Montalvo.
In the cage for the hosts,
Jaden Kilmer (East Islip, N.Y.) made a pair of saves, while Cueman stopped 12 shots on goal.
Kaitlyn Biase (Nesconset, N.Y. ) had two defensive saves in the Wolves' back field, including one early in the contest at 4:19. WestConn outshot the Corsairs 23-7 and had a 7-3 penalty corner edge.
