DANBURY, Conn. - After earning her 1,000th career dig earlier in the week, senior libero
Jersey Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) added to her total with a match-high 24 as the Western Connecticut State University women's volleyball team blanked visiting Vermont State University Castleton, 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-9), in the Little East Conference opener for both squads on Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.
Junior outside hitter
Julia Stoliker (Red Hook, N.Y.) paced the Wolves with a match-high 15 kills to go along with a .325 hitting percentage. Rookie outside hitter
Hallie Robillard (Middletown, Conn.) chipped in with nine shots to the floor, while senior setter
Maggie Ferguson (Southbury, Conn.) put forth her usual stellar effort as she handed out a match-high 31 assists.
First-year outside hitter Sam Ford (Fort Wayne, Ind.) led the Spartans with six kills, while sophomore setter Alondra Rojas (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) dished out 21 helpers.
The Wolves rallied from an early 6-1 deficit to start the match. They countered to capture a 15-11 advantage when Ferguson ripped a service ace across the twine. The set went back-and-forth before the hosts outlasted the visitors on an error. WestConn held a 24-19 lead in the second set before Castleton reeled off a 4-0 run to keep things interesting, slicing the gap to 24-23. But the Wolves managed to hold them off when Robillard took a feed from Ferguson to smack home the set-winner. The Spartans would not recover as WestConn built up a comfortable cushion in the third frame and would cruise the rest of the way.
With the win, the Wolves improved to 11-3 overall and 1-0 in league play, while Castleton sank to 7-7 and 0-1. WestConn will seek to extend the win streak to seven when they St. Joseph's University Long Island for a non-conference tilt on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
