PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Senior setter Maggie Ferguson (Southbury, Conn.) and junior outside hitter Julia Stoliker (Red Hook, N.Y.) combined for 15 kills to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-12, 25-23) over non-conference host St. Joseph's University (LI) on Wednesday evening. Ferguson also dished out 22 assists to pace the Wolves' offense.
The Golden Eagles opened the first set with an ace from junior setter Lauren Goss (Bellport, N.Y.), but WestConn quickly recovered and took control. Leading 11-10 midway through, the Wolves pulled away and never looked back. The second set was all WestConn, who dominated from the start and consistently didn't allow the opposition within three points. The third set proved to be the most competitive. After falling behind 13-9, the Wolves clawed their way back to reclaim the lead and close out the match.
Senior defensive specialist Isabella Pincince (West Hartford, Conn.) fired a match-high four service aces while senior libero Jersey Jones (Middletown, N.Y.) anchored a match-high 15 digs for the Wolves.
For the Golden Eagles, Goss and sophomore right side hitter Alison Tsororos (Hauppauge, N.Y.) shared their team lead with 14 digs apiece, while sophomore right side hitter Isabella Juliano (Massapequa, N.Y.) added eight kills.
With the win, WestConn improves to 12-3, while St. Joseph's (LI) drops to 7-3 overall. The Wolves look to extend their winning streak as they host Plymouth State University in a conference match up on Saturday at 12 pm.
