DANBURY, Conn. — With less than 10 minutes remaining in the match up,
Jaelyn Moulton (Stafford Springs, Conn.) netted the game-tying goal to force extra time, but the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team dropped a heavily contested game, 3-2, to the visiting Drew University Rangers on Wednesday. The Wolves fell to 3-4 on the season, while the Rangers improved to 7-1.
Liriana Seferovic scored first for the visitors at 7:18 off a penalty corner to quickly put Drew up, 1-0 in the first quarter. Less than a minute later, the Rangers had a close opportunity to take a two-goal lead after Emily Caporrino picked off the Wolves and sprinted across the field, but
Samantha Leonard (Beacon Falls, Conn.) caught up to her for the takeaway.Â
At the 38-minute mark,
Nora Tracy (Middlebury, Conn.) connected for the equalizer after she inserted the ball in off a Wolves penalty corner in the third quarter. With less than two minutes in the period, a scrum occurred in front of the net as
Jaden Kilmer (East Islip, N.Y.) stopped a shot and
Kaitlyn Biase (Nesconset, N.Y.) recorded a defensive save, but Caporrino was able to find the back of the net.
With another one-goal deficit, WestConn was able to rally for the equalizer in the fourth quarter, this time off the stick of Moulton, to force eventually overtime. With 3:54 remaining in regulation,
Reagan Schoen (Newtown, Conn.) denied a close opportunity for the Rangers to score in the fourth with a takeaway. Following the steal, Schoen led the charge across the field but couldn't get the shot off as the senior and Rangers' goalkeeper Beth Kelly hit the turf.
On back-to-back possessions, Leonard denied any attempts on goal by Chandler Straub for the potential game-winning goal in the final period.
After the first overtime, the Wolves' best attempt came off a penalty corner with nine seconds remaining as Schoen drew the foul. Tracy inserted the ball before Schoen sent it towards the goal, but Kelly kicked it away and Moulton's rebounded shot was blocked by a Ranger defender.
Another battle in front of the Wolves' net, as Kilmer saved Caporrino's first shot, but she was able to tap in the deflection for the game-winning goal with 3:23 remaining in double overtime.
Kilmer had 10 saves on the night, while Kelly stopped 17 WestConn shots. Drew had 23 corner attempts and the hosts only had eight.
The Wolves remain at home as they host Little East Conference opponent UMass Dartmouth at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Westside Athletic Complex.
