DANBURY, Conn. - Sophomore forward
Shannon Anderson (New Milford, Conn.) tallied two goals and two assists to propel the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team past visiting Little East Conference nemesis Plymouth State, 4-1, on Saturday morning. The Wolves are now 9-1-1 in the last 11 contests against the Panthers.
The Wolves came out firing on all cylinders as they outshot the visitors by a whopping 12-3 margin in the first half. Anderson took a nifty pass from rookie forward
Madelyn Dwyer (Poughquag, N.Y.) and found the back of the net just 8:52 into the game. Moments later, Anderson threaded a feed to senior
Hannah Blacher (Allendale, N.J.) who canned her second marker of the season. The hosts stretched the gap to 3-0 shortly before halftime when Anderson fired home her team-leading 5th goal of the campaign, unassisted.
After a stellar kick save from WestConn junior netminder
Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J.), the Panthers player was fouled inside the box, setting up a penalty kick score off the foot of rookie midfielder Islah Godo (Topsham, Maine), cutting the deficit to 3-1. However, the Wolves retaliated when Anderson connected with rookie forward
Morgan Marcuss (Meriden, Conn.) who drilled her first career goal in the 80th minute of play, rounding the count out at 4-1.
Regan finished with two saves to earn the win, while Plymouth sophomore goalie Christa Giansiracusa (Tewksbury, Mass.) turned aside 13 shots and took the loss. With the win, WestConn improved to 5-3-1 overall and 2-0 in league play, while the Panthers fell to 3-4 and 0-2. The Wolves return to the field when they host non-conference opponent Brooklyn College on Monday at 6 p.m.
