ALBANY, N.Y. - Sophomore forward Shannon Anderson (New Milford, Conn.), scored her second goal of the season to secure Western Connecticut State University the 1-0 win over the Russell College Gators in a non-conference women's soccer match on Wednesday. The Wolves improved to 4-3-1, while the Gators fell to 2-4. WestConn look to continue their win streak as they host Plymouth State University in their second conference match of the season on Saturday at 9:30am.
Only four shots were taken in the first half, all on goal, including two in the first 12 minutes by Wolves freshman Madelyn Dwyer (Poughquag, N.Y.), a third WestConn shot by junior midfielder Jasmine Islami (Bethel, Conn.) and the lone Gator shot by Anna Shepherd in the 20th minute that was stopped by Wolves junior goalie Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J.). Anderson had two bids blocked by Gator defenders off corner kicks early in the second half, and finally broke through with the deciding goal from junior Morgan Fontaine (Stamford, Conn.). Both Regan and Sage Olivia Horan made one save in the second half to finish with two and four, respectively. The Wolves earned 14 corner kicks to just two for the home team.
