Hallie Robillard (Middletown, Conn.) belted a season-high 17 kills but the Western Connecticut State University women's volleyball squad fell at non-conference foe Trinity College, 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18), on Tuesday evening at Ray Oosting Gymnasium. Maggie Ferguson (Southbury, Conn.) dished out a match-high 38 assists in the loss.
Ellie Gordon led the Bantams with 15 kills, while Emma Ewart added a dozen. Caroline Howell chipped in with 33 helpers, while Scarlett Jago collected a match-high 33 digs.
The Wolves got off to a sluggish start and dropped behind early in the opening set, 6-1. They rallied to seize a 14-13 advantage before the hosts pulled ahead once again, 20-16. But the visitors continued to fight as they sliced the deficit to 21-20. However, the Bantams rattled off four straight points to earn the opening set win.Â
WestConn jumped out to an early 6-0 lead to begin the second frame. Senior
Delia Clouden (Newtown, Conn.) and Robillard finished off the spurt with a block. However, the Wolves gave up the lead before it switched hands several times. They pulled ahead once again, 24-20, before eventually knotting the match at 1-1 when Robillard connected with the floor to wrap it up, 25-22.Â
The Wolves fell behind 20-13 before dropping the third frame. Shortly thereafter, they were down 20-15 in the fourth. The Bantams ended up seizing the set to earn the match victory. With the loss, WestConn sank to 5-3 overall while Trinity improved to 7-1. The Wolves return to action when they for the Oswego State Invitational this weekend. They square up against non-league opponent Keuka College to begin play on Friday at 4 p.m.
