WestConn Men's Tennis Hosts Southern Maine In LEC First Round Tuesday

DANBURY, Conn. – The Western Connecticut State University men's tennis team will be the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Little East Conference (LEC) Championship Tournament, having qualified for the post-season for the 13th time and the 10th year in a row. The Wolves, coached by Shawn Stillman (11th Season), finished the regular season with a 7-9 overall record and in fourth place with a 3-3 mark in league tilts.  WestConn will host the No. 5-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies (3-7, 2-4 LEC) Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in the LEC Championship opening round. The winner of Tuesday's match will play at top-seeded Rhode Island College on Thursday, May 1 at 3:30 p.m. and the finals will be at the highest remaining seed on Saturday, May 3. 

The winner of the Little East Championship Tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.  The Wolves edged the Huskies, 5-4, on April 13 in Maine, while Southern Maine is making its first-ever appearance in the tournament since 2022.  The other first round match Tuesday features No. 3-seeded UMass Boston vs. No. 6-seeded Salem State with the winner of that match facing No. 2-seeded Bridgewater State on Thursday in the other semifinal.  WestConn has won the LEC title once, defeating Salem State, 5-0, in the 2010 finals.

Sophomore Aidan Burke (Wilton, Conn.) leads WestConn in singles wins with a 9-7 record while playing No. 2 in the Wolves lineup.  Senior Caleb Harris (Guilford, Conn..) is 8-7 in singles matches, while freshman Jose Zambrano (Danbury, Conn.) is 4-6.  Senior Kevin Tenesaca (Danbury, Conn.) has been at the top of the Wolves' singles ladder all season, while senior Nicholas Peschier (Bridgeport, Conn.) and sophomore John Araujo (bethel, Conn.) round out the starting six.  In doubles, Burke and Tenesaca have been a solid tandem at the top of the ladder with an 8-8 record this spring.  Harris and Zambrano are 7-6 in doubles for the Wolves.
