Kevin Tenesaca (Danbury, Conn.) won in singles and doubles to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Albertus Magnus College Falcons in men's tennis action this afternoon. WestConn improves to 6-9 and drops a three-match losing skid with its second win over the Falcons this spring.
With every varsity team member in the starting lineup in WestConn's final home match of the regular season, WestConn started the match with a sweep of doubles play. Freshman
Axel Javier (Danbury, Conn.) and
Jose Zambrano (Danbury, Conn.) got things started with an 8-2 win at third doubles. Senior Nicholas (Bridgeport, Conn.) and sophomore
John Araujo (Bethel, Conn.) avenged an earlier loss to the same Falcon opponents, 8-3, at second doubles. Tenesaca and junior partner
Aidan Burke (Wilton, Conn.) closed out the doubles sweep, 8-4, at the top of the ladder.
In singles, Tenesaca secured the first win, 6-0, 6-1, followed by rookie
Bhavya Rana (Danbury, Conn.) at No. 5 by the same score as both made up for singles losses to Albertus in the first matchup. Senior
Caleb Harris (Guilford, Conn.) clinched WestConn's victory, winning his match, 6-3, 6-3. Freshman
Henry Gsell (Bridgewater, Conn.) got the final victory and his first career singles win, coming from behind after dropping the first set and winning, 10-5, in the third set tiebreaker.
"This was a total team win. It's not often I can get everyone in the starting lineup and it worked out today," said WestConn Head Coach Shawn Stillman. "The doubles play was impressive. Nice way to close out our last home match for the regular season."
