ORLANDO, Fla. - The Western Connecticut State University men's tennis team put forth a solid effort, however, they came up on the short end of a 5-2 decision, falling to Edgewood College on Monday during their spring trip.
The duo of graduate student
Kevin Tenesaca (Danbury, Conn.) and junior
Aidan Burke (Wilton, Conn.) shined as they rolled to 6-3 doubles win to get the action started. Rookies
Axel Javier (Danbury, Conn.) and
Henry Gsell (Bridgewater, Conn.) lost their collegiate debut at No. 3 doubles. Needing seniors
Caleb Harris (Guilford, Conn.) and
Nicholas Peschier (Bridgeport, Conn.) in the second slot to win in order to get a point, they took their opponents to the brink but fell, 6-4.
In singles action,
Bhavya Rana (Danbury, Conn.) won his collegiate debut at No. 6 singles. Burke won convincingly at No.2. Tenesaca, No. 1)Â dropped the first set 6-4, and then forced a third set tiebreaker as he won the second set 6-2. Tenesaca got down early and faced four match points down 5-9 in the 10-point breaker. He then ripped out five straight points having a match point, but just missed a backhand passing shot down the line. He fought off another match point, but eventually fell 13-11.
"We are taking this opportunity while we're in Florida to establish a starting lineup and evaluate everyone's play. It was solid play at No.1Â and No. 2 doubles. Burke played great at No. 2 singles and Tenesaca nearly won a very exciting match in the top spot. It was great to see Rana get his first college win at his debut start in the sixth slot," said WestConn head coach Shawn Stillman following play.
The Wolves return to action when they matchup against Crown College tomorrow at 9 a.m.
