WestConn Baseball Too Much For Yeshiva On Opening Day

TEANECK, N.J.- Sophomore Ryan Vallie (East Haven, Conn.) went 8-for-8 with seven runs and seven RBIs to lead the visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a dominant sweep over the Yeshiva University Maccabees in the teams' season-opening doubleheader played today at Fairleigh Dickinson University.  WestConn poured in 36 runs over seven innings in game one and continued its onslaught with a 27-0 win in seven innings in the second game.  Seven Wolves pitchers combined to allow eight hits in the 14 frames, while WestConn pounded out 49 hits, 15 for extra bases, and four home runs in the doubleheader.  WestConn will head to South Carolina for several games over spring break from March 17 to 21.

WestConn led, 9-0, after two innings and dropped 16 runs in the third frame of the first game.  Vallie was 5-for-5 with four runs, five RBIs, a double, and a stolen base, while graduate student Connor Corcoran (Danbury, Conn.) and senior Nick Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) each had six RBIS, and senior Spencer Barnett (Danbury, Conn.) tripled and homered with five RBIs.  Senior starter Max Grewal (Long Beach, N.Y.) struck out nine over four innings and allowed one hit to earn the win in game one.  Vallie went 3-for-3 in the second game with three runs, two RBI, a walk and a stolen base, reaching base in all nine of his plate appearances.  Freshman Billy Untiet (Southington, Conn.) had a home run and six RBIs, senior Anthony Piazza (Lynbrook, N.Y.) was 3-for-3, and sophomore righty Brian Mansfield (Lynbrook, N.Y.) fanned five and allowed two hits over four innings of work in his first start of 2025.
