DANBURY, Conn. —
Scott McNulty (Williamstown, N.J.) and
Tyler Gobel (Lindon, N.J.) each record two points for the Western Connecticut State University men's ice hockey team, but it wasn't enough as the Wolves dropped a 6-3 contest at home against Assumption College on Saturday. WestConn moved to 1-9-0 overall, while the Greyhounds improved to 7-6-1.
Less than four minutes into the opening period, the visitors netted the first goal of the game off the stick of Jake Russell before
Connor Loerzel (Gads Hill, Ontario) knotted the game at one five minutes later. After a takeaway in Assumption's attacking zone by
Victor Gonzalez (Ridgefield, Conn.), the Wolves charged towards the net for a saved shot on net by
Tyler Blassingame (Allen, Texas), but
Jordan Blais (Enfield, Conn. ) was there to recover the puck as Loerzel tipped it in at 8:13.
Assumption regained the lead at 7:40 in the second period, followed by a powerplay goal at 18:50 to take the 3-2 edge. To start the final period, Gobel won the faceoff for the quick right pass to McNulty, who then sends it to
Francis Rose (Clarkston, Mich.) as the first-year brought it into the scoring zone. Rose passed it to Gobel, who attempted a shot on goal before the save by goaltender Michael Salvatore. Again, Rose was there to maintain possession near the right side boards, followed by the pass to McNulty to cut the deficit to one 16 seconds into the third. Gobel netted the equalizer at 13:00 in the final stanza with helpers from Rose and McNulty and capitalized on the shorthanded Greyhounds.Â
Assumption scored a trio of goals in the remaining two minutes of regulation.
Liam Lane (Castle Rock, Colo.) saved a career-high 48 shots on goal for WestConn, while Salvatore denied 39 attempts by the Wolves. Botn teams went 1/7 on powerplay opportunities and Assumption outshot the hosts 54-42.
WestConn returns to Danbury Ice Arena on January 2 against Westfield State University, with a 4 p.m. puck drop.
