DANBURY, Conn. — Despite
Jack Graham (Burnaby, British Columbia) and
Phil Parker (Rehoboth, Mass.) each netting an equalizer and an assist, the Western Connecticut State University men's ice hockey team dropped a close 4-2 matchup against Westfield State University at the Danbury Ice Arena on Friday. The Wolves moved to 1-10 overall, while the Owls improved to 8-4 on the season.
With nine seconds remaining in the first period, Jesper Seeberg capitalized on the shorthanded Wolves to put the Owls up, 1-0, but Graham eventually knotted it at one apiece at 8:26 in the second. After a long pass across the ice, Parker managed to control the puck for a pass towards the left of the net, but Westfield State's goaltender Russ DeCoste abandoned the cage to intercept the puck. DeCoste's stray pass attempt out of the attacking zone connected directly with Graham's stick for the quick goal before the goalie could skate back to the net.
Exactly four minutes later, the Owls took the one-goal lead as Emille Pichette scored off the assists from Cooper Board and William Chausse. Halfway through the final period, Parker found the back of the net to again tie the contest at 2-2.
Dante Debueriis (Port Washington, N.Y.) brought the puck across the ice before the tie-up behind the Owls' net caused the defender to send it towards Graham to the right of the net. Graham passed the puck back to Debueriis, who quickly saw an open Parker for the slapshot just past the goaltender's glove at 10:07.
Jesper scored again to put Westfield State up by one, before an empty net goal padded the Owls' win.
WestConn held the visitors to 23 shots through two periods, the fewest the Owls have taken all season.
Liam Lane (Castle Rock, Colo.) stopped 28 shots in the net for the Wolves, while DeCoste denied 31.
The Wolves travel to Trinity College (Conn.) on Sunday for a 4 p.m. puck drop.
