DANBURY, Conn. —
Phil Parker (Rehoboth, Mass.) delivered the eventual game-winner for the Western Connecticut State University men's ice hockey team for its first-ever win in program history. The Wolves defeated non-conference opponent Roger Williams University, 1-0, and improved to 1-8-0 overall, while the Hawks dropped to 2-6-0 on Tuesday.
Liam Lane (Castle Rock, Colo.) denied a shot on goal by Christian Worrell, which ricocheted to
Tyler Gobel's (Lindon, N.J.) stick along the home benches in the final period. Gobel recovered the puck before sending it high in the sky from the blueline to Parker across the ice in the attacking zone as the sophomore was left alone with a single defender to connect with the twine in the right-side corner two minutes into the third stanza. Despite being shorthanded, Parker managed to score during the home team's penalty. The teams both went 0/4 on powerplay opportunities.
Both teams went scoreless in the opening two periods as Lane made 11 saves for the Wolves before the hosts' goal and Jacob Jaslow made 19 prior to the tally. Each goaltender totaled 22 stops in the net through regulation. The Hawks' backline blocked 14 shots, while WestConn sent away nine.
WestConn remains at home on December 6 for a game against non-conference foe Assumption University at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
