SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — With two seconds left in regulation,
Tayejon Lynch (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) landed a jumper to seal the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team's 69-68 victory on the road at Skidmore College on Wednesday at the Williamson Sports & Recreation Center. The Wolves improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Thoroughbreds dropped to 1-2 overall.
The hosts maintained the lead for the final three and a half minutes of the first half through the majority of the second until Lynch's gave the Wolves the one-point edge.
Nick Boyce (Jamaica, N.Y.) set up the buzzer-beater off a blocked three-pointer by Aidan Roy with 29 seconds left on the board as Lynch recovered the ball of the offensive rebound. A missed deep shot by the Wolves and an offensive rebound by
Nicholas Moore (Buffalo, N.Y.) kept the play alive before Lynch's jumper.
Ten seconds into the contest, Lynch stole the ball, but the visitors couldn't connect for their first points; however, three possessions later, another steal by the senior ignited a fast break layup in the paint by
Marcel Henry (Yonkers, N.Y.) at 18:42 to take a 2-0 lead. The teams trade buckets across the next minute before a six-point run by Skidmore put them up 7-4 at 17:03. Back-to-back three pointers by Moore and a layup by
Quintin Chapman (Danbury, Conn.) gave WestConn a three-point advantage through the first six minutes of action. Again, the teams battled back and forth through 11 minutes until a tip-in by Joey Skoric knotted the score at 30 with 4:49 on the clock. Skidmore went on an 8-6 run to close out the half for a two-point lead, 38-36.
The home team went on a 19-11 run, including a trio of three-point baskets for a 10-point edge at 9:46. WestConn narrowed the deficit to within four off a three-pointer by
Elijah Guillaume (New Haven, Conn.) and a three-point play by Boyce, who drilled a fast break layup off the rebound by Moore and a block by Guillaume and drew the foul. Skidmore recorded five straight points to regain a nine-point lead, but a 9-0 score stretch by WestConn cut the deficit to one point. During the stretch, Lynch connected for a layup, Guillaume netted a pair of free throws,
Armaan Sandhu (Abbotsford, British Columbia) swished a three and
Jahlyl Morgan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored off a free throw.
Skdmore held the lead off six made free throws, but six straight points by Lynch, including two free throws and a pair of two-point buckets, clinched the win for WestConn.
WestConn outplayed the Thoroughbreds in points off turnovers (20-10), bench points (26-8), points in the paint (34-26) and fast break points (11-4). Skidmore had the 19-16 second-chance point advantage. Boyce recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to go with two assists and a block. Guillaume led the team with 12 points, along with six rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal, while Lynch had a team-high four steals to go with nine points, four rebounds, four assists and a block.
