DANBURY, Conn. - Despite team-highs of 21 points and eight rebounds from sophomore forward
Marcel Henry (Yonkers, N.Y.), the Western Connecticut State University men's basketball team was edged by visiting non-conference opponent Clark University, 76-75, on Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena. Classmate guard
Nicholas Moore (Buffalo, N.Y.) and senior forward
Nick Boyce (Jamaica, N.Y.) joined him in double figures in scoring with 10 apiece.
Sophomore guard Kyle Squires (Kingston, Mass.) sank a game-high 24 points which included six three-pointers to lead the visitors. Senior guard Reid Neumann (Burbank, Calif.) chipped in with 18 while also draining six trifectas. Junior guard Quentin Pridgen (Fitchburg, Mass.) hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Cougars were red-hot in the first half as they nailed 61.9 percent (13-for-21) of their shots from the floor. Despite their stellar shooting, the Wolves managed to snag a 37-36 halftime advantage. For the game, WestConn forced 28 turnovers while committing just 10 themselves.
Clark captured a nine-point advantage when Neumann canned a three-pointer in midway through the second half before the Wolves came roaring back. Henry ignited the rally with a layup before junior guard
Jahlyl Morgan (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) buried a pair of free throws to round out a 13-2 run, giving the hosts a 71-69 lead with 2:32 remaining. The lead switched hands several times before WestConn led 75-72 when Boyce took a fast break feed from Morgan and connected with 1:05 left to go. However, the Cougars scurried in for a pair of layups to regain the lead, 76-75, with 36 ticks to go. The Wolves were fouled on the ensuing possession but could not come up with the shots from the stripe. Morgan attempted a last second heave from beyond half court that was deflected.
With the loss, WestConn moved to 3-2 overall while Clark improved to 4-1. The Wolves will look to get back to their winning ways when they travel to the City College of New York on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
