Sara Macary (Naugatuck, Conn.) had 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 62-52 win over the visiting John Jay College Bloodhounds in women's basketball action at Feldman Arena in the William O'Neill Center this evening. The game was the season opener for WestConn, while the Bloodhounds fall to 0-2. The Wolves will visit Nichols next on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Sophomore guard
Cameron Froehlich (Brookfield, Conn.) made four of eight three-pointers for 12 points and added three steals for the Wolves. Essence Richardson and Bryan Bascones both scored 12 points for John Jay.
WestConn sophomore Deana Garcia (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), senior
Malaysia Dingle (Brockton, Mass.) and Froehlich drilled three-pointers in the first quarter, helping the Wolves lead 11-10, at the first break. WestConn went on a 12-1 run in the second quarter, including four points each by Dingle and Macary, to turn a 17-16 lead in a double-digit advantage at 29-17 with 3:46 left in the first half. John Jay scored the last six points of the second frame to pull within, 36-30, at the break.
Bascones scored on a fastbreak to pull the Bloodhounds to within three at 47-44 with 1:15 on the clock in the third quarter, while rookie forward
Julyssa Patterson (Waterbury, Conn.) scored on a put-back to push WestConn's lead to 50-44 at the final intermission. The Wolves scored the first 14 points of the fourth quarter to pull away, as Patterson scored six of the 14, and the home team maintained its double-digit lead the rest of the way. Senior
Leana Heitmann (East Syracuse, N.Y.) added nine points, eight rebounds, and four assists, and Patterson finished with eight points and six boards off the bench. Dingle paced WestConn in assists with five to go with seven points. Briana Minick scored 10 points and Michaela Lattimore collected a game-high 15 rebounds for John Jay.
