DANBURY, Conn. — Despite holding the offense to 14 points in the first half, the Western Connecticut State University football team dropped a Landmark Conference game, 34-0, against Susquehanna University at home on Saturday. The Wolves moved to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the league, while the River Hawks improved to 6-2 and 4-0.
The visitors got on the board in the first quarter with six minutes remaining as Josh Ehrlich threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Growney for the 7-0 lead.
The Wolves had an opportunity to even the game on their second possession in the opening quarter. WestConn began the drive at its own 25-yard line as
Dylan Jackson (Monroe, Conn.) completed a short 10-yard pass to
John Fitzmaurice (New Milford, Conn.) on the opening play for a first down. On the next pass, Jackson kept the offense moving with a pass to the right as
Serge Lagardere (Stamford, Conn.) ran for a 15-yard gain and WestConn's second consecutive first down. The hosts managed to get down to the red zone at the 21-yard line, despite two broken up by Berkeley Wagner, followed by back-to-back rushes by
Quasim Benson (Wilmington, Del.), which put the Wolves on the seven-yard line. Jackson was sacked two plays later by Wagner, but the junior quarterback rushed up the middle for an 11-yard gain before being stopped at the one-yard line. Benson attempted to push through the River Hawks' defense, but he was stopped short of the end zone on a fourth-and-one play.
Susquehanna scored again in the second quarter, but a broken up pass by
Tyon Grimes (Hempstead, N.Y.) following a deep throw to Carter McCauley forced a turnover on downs and held the River Hawks to only a 14-0 advantage. However, the visitors came out of the locker room hot for 20 unanswered points and held WestConn to 19 plays for 44 total yards.
WestConn's defense made 93 total tackles, with
Eamon Moran (Stratford, Conn.) and Grimes leading the pack with 14 and 11, respectively.
The Wolves return to the WAC for a conference matchup against Catholic University on November 8 at noon. The Wolves will be hosting a Military Appreciation Day at the game.
