DANBURY, Conn. - Freshman goalkeeper
Gracie Bomboy (Bainbridge, N.Y.) made 21 saves and the Western Connecticut State University Wolves were in a scoreless tie at the half, but the visiting Springfield College Pride came away with a 1-0 win in field hockey action at Westside Stadium this afternoon. WestConn falls to 2-2 and Springfield improves to 1-2. The Wolves will host Manhattanville next on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Both teams had chances to score in the first half, as Bomboy made six saves before the break and WestConn junior forward
Reagan Schoen (Newtown, Conn.) was stopped on a breakaway by Neilee Hess in the final minute of the first quarter and Schoen knifed through the Pride defense and backhanded shots over the cage twice in the second stanza.
Bomboy made a clutch save one-on-one against Springfield's Hailey Gaydos and stopped another shot with her blocker among her 10 saves in the third quarter, but Springfield scored the game's only goal on one of its 21 penalty corners with 1:51 left before the final break. Nicolette Morlock's pass made its way across the goal from left to right to Gaydos who punched the ball into the cage from close range for the gamewinner. WestConn did not get off a shot in the last quarter, as Hess finished with three saves in the Springfield cage. Springfield outshot the Wolves, 33-4, and WestConn did not have a penalty corner.
