DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University Wolves were beaten, 1-0, by the visiting Manhattanville College Valiants in field hockey action this afternoon at Westside Stadium. WestConn outshot the Valiants, 11-6, and had eight penalty corners to five for the visitors but could not push a goal across. The Wolves will visit Wilkes next on Saturday at 1 p.m.
After a scoreless first quarter that featured just three total shots and 20 combined fouls, WestConn had several chances in the second frame. Freshman midfielder
Jaelyn Moulton (Stafford Springs, Conn.) had a shot denied on a defensive save by Valiant defender Sabina Cosmo early in the second and Manhattanville goalie Hannah Doherty made an acrobatic stop against WestConn junior forward
Reagan Schoen (Newtown, Conn.) moments later. Doherty finished with four saves in the quarter, while Keira Guinan knocked in a pass by Taylor Benedetto with 3:12 left before the half to put Manhattanville ahead, 1-0.
WestConn's defense stopped the Valiants on two early penalty corners in the third quarter, and Wolves junior forward
Miah Ruiz (New Fairfield, Conn.) was stopped by Doherty on a breakaway with less than three minutes remaining in the third. In the fourth, Ruiz got off a hard blast on a penalty corner but Doherty made her eighth save of the game and WestConn did not record another shot on goal.
