DANBURY, Conn. – The Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team improved to 2-1-1 overall following a 2-1 non-conference victory over the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Friday night at the Westside Athletic Complex.
After having a penalty kick attempt smothered in the opening moments, the Wolves broke the ice less than 23 minutes into the contest when rookie midfielder
Kelly Martyanov (Old Greenwich, Conn.) took a short cross from senior forward
Suzana Imetovski (Seymour, Conn.) and booted the ball into the top corner of the twine. WestConn added to the advantage just 2:20 later when Imetovski gathered a rebound and buried a shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
The action went back-and-forth in the second half. Wolves sophomore forward
Jasmine Islami (Bethel, Conn.) nearly extended the lead to three goals but her shot rattled off the right post in the 69
th minute. The Mariners sliced the deficit to 2-1 with just under six minutes left to play when rookie midfielder Lauren Enterline (Harrisburg, Pa.) netted her first goal of the season. The visitors continued to apply pressure in the waning moments but the hosts held them off to security the victory.
WestConn rookie goalkeeper
Ashlyn Flood (Stamford, Conn.) earned the win, while recording five saves before being relieved by junior
Gia Giorgianni (Easton, Conn.) midway thru the second half. USMMA senior netminder Margaret Ripperger (McKinney, Texas) took the loss and notched six stops before rookie Eva Fields (Williamsburg, Va.) took over between the pipes.
The Wolves return to action when they head to the University of Saint Joseph Long Island on Sunday at 1 p.m. for a non-league matchup.
