DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University Wolves handed the visiting Mount St. Mary College Knights a 9-0 loss in the season-opening women's tennis match for both teams this afternoon at Westside Courts. The Wolves will host the University of St. Joseph Blue Jays next on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Freshmen
Ava Ciampi (Wolcott, Conn.) won her first collegiate doubles and singles victories and senior teammate
Jessica Nyitrai (Trumbull, Conn.) won her first college doubles match.
Ciampi partnered with Wolves senior
Sarah Cipriano (Watertown, Conn.) at No. 2 doubles for an 8-2 win, while Nyitrai teamed with senior
Brooke Stillman (Brookfield, Conn.) at No. 3 doubles for an 8-4 victory. WestConn seniors
Sophie Charbonneau (Oakville, Conn.) and
Melanie Grasso (New Fairfield, Conn.) completed the double sweep at the top of the ladder with an 8-4 win, while all five Wolves singles players won in straight sets. Stillman pulled out a 10-7 victory in her third tiebreaking set to preserve the shutout at sixth singles.
"It's always great to get the win and to start the season on a high note," said WestConn Head Coach Shawn Stillman. "There is much we all need to do to improve and get better and there is never enough time, but our team has been working very hard over these last few weeks. We have a great group of players and I look forward to an exciting season."
