Women's Tennis Edged at Plymouth State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Despite some tremendous action to begin doubles play, the Western Connecticut State University women's tennis team ended up coming away with the short end of a 6-3 decision, falling at Little East Conference foe Plymouth State University on Saturday afternoon.

Doubles action ended with excitement as Westconn looked to take two-of-three courts. After losing the No. 2 slot, the duo of senior Brooke Stillman (Brookfield, Conn.) and rookie Ava Ciampi (Wolcott, Conn.) came up big to seize an 8-4 win on Court One, Seniors Diana Rebelo (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Melanie Grasso (New Fairfield, Conn.) forced their contest to a tiebreak, and even had a match point, but could not hold on and lost 8-6 in the tiebreaker.

In singles action, needing four courts, Ciampi got the Wolves started in the right direction with a solid win from the No. 5 spot. Stillman and Charbonneau lost, making the overall score 2-4. In the meantime, WestConn top-seeded senior Sarah Cipriano (Watertown, Conn.) and Rebelo - from the No. 3 slot - fought back to force a third set and Grasso was battling close second set after dropping the first in her contest from the No. 2 hole.

The Panthers clinched the win when Rebelo fell. Cipriano did secure her come-from-behind victory in a third set tiebreaker, while Grasso fell 6-4 in the second stanza.

"This was a playoff match in our mind. We knew we needed to win and we played with the intensity to match. We were a point away from a doubles court and some singles courts were very close also. We'll look to rebound in our next match," stated WestConn head coach Shawn Stillman following play.

With the loss, the Wolves dropped to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play. They return to the court at LEC opponent UMass Dartmouth on Saturday.
