DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Senior
Sophie Charbonneau (Oakville, Conn.) stormed back to win her singles match while also notching a doubles play victory. However, it was not enough as the Western Connecticut State University women's tennis team was edged at Little East Conference foe UMass Dartmouth, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolves held the advantage heading into singles action. After WestConn dropped the doubles opener, Charbonneau teamed up with classmate
Sarah Cipriano (Watertown, Conn.) to capture an 8-3 win. Shortly thereafter, the duo of senior
Brooke Stillman (Brookfield, Conn.) and rookie
Ava Ciampi (Wolcott, Conn.) racked up an 8-4 decision for the visitors.
However, the Corsairs rallied in singles play to escape with the match victory. After falling in the opening set, Charbonneau rallied to edge her opponent in three sets (1-6, 6-4, 7-5) which accounted for the lone singles win for the Wolves.
With the loss, WestConn sank to 3-7 overall and 1-4 in league play, while UMass Dartmouth improved to 6-6 and 3-3. The Wolves return to action tomorrow at Noon when they host the University of Southern Maine in yet another LEC matchup.
