WestConn Football Wins At Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. - The visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves outscored the Westfield State University Owls, 21-0, after the first quarter and earned a 31-13 win in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) football action this afternoon at Alumni Field.  WestConn improves to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the MASCAC with its first home game of the season coming up next Saturday against league rival Bridgewater State.  Westfield State falls to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the MASCAC.  Sophomore WR Dae'Shawn Allen (White Plains, N.Y.) caught eight passes for 108 yards and a touchdown and senior RB Kamryn Holmes (Branford, Conn.) added 86 rushing yards and another score for the Wolves.

WestConn trailed, 13-10, after the first quarter but completed an 11-play, 83-yard drive with a 32-yard run to paydirt by senior QB Keion Jones (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) to take a 17-13 lead and dominated the game from there.  The Wolves defense forced two Owl punts but WestConn failed to score again before halftime, missing a 23-yard field goal in the final minute before halftime.  Holmes rushed for 25 yards on three plays and Westfield State committed a roughing the passer penalty to push WestConn deep into Owls territory early in the third frame.  Wolves senior QB John Giller (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) came in and found Allen in the end zone from seven yards away to push the visitors lead to 24-13 less than three minutes into the third quarter.

Westfield State rallied and advanced to the Wolves 18-yard line but senior DB Milleeq Green (Bridgeport, Conn.) blocked an Owls field goal try.  WestConn took advantage quickly, as Jones connected with senior WR Zach Soriano (Middle Island, N.Y.) for a 43-yard pass on the first play of the next drive and Holmes scampered into end zone on the next play for a 31-13 Wolves lead with 4:37 remaining in the third.  Neither team scored and Green and freshman Herve Toupou (New Haven, Conn.) both intercepted Owl passes in the fourth quarter .

Jones finished 18-for-29 for 237 yards passing but threw two interceptions, while Westfield State QB Gabe Fernandez was 8-for-20 for 153 yards. Soriano and sophomore Markus Faucett (Bronx, N.Y.) caught three passes each for 76 and 51 yards, respectively, for WestConn.  Sean Willis ran for 81 yards and Dylan Disabella caught four balls for 99 yards for the Owls.  Junior LB Dominic Rienzi (Brewster, N.Y.) paced the WestConn defense with nine tackles and senior DE Kile Jackson (Danbury, Conn.) added five tackles, two tackles for loss, and a sack.  Tafari Proctor had nine tackles and intercepted a pass for the Owls.
