DANBURY, Conn. - Junior forward
Reagan Schoen (Newtown, Conn.) scored both goals to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 2-0 victory over the William Paterson University Pioneers in field hockey action this evening at Westside Stadium. WestConn improves to 4-3 with its second win in a row and will host Marywood on Saturday at noon in its next game. William Paterson drops to 1-3.
William Paterson recorded the first three shots on goal, but the Wolves took a 1-0 lead when junior forward
Miah Ruiz (New Fairfield, Conn.) snuck a pass from the left wing to Schoen in front of the cage for the first goal of the game with 4:03 left in the first quarter. WestConn peppered Pioneer goalie Sofia Chebookjian with seven shots in the second frame while yielding just one but neither team scored again before halftime.
Chebookjian and Wolves freshman backstop
Gracie Bomboy (Bainbridge, N.Y.) each made a pair of saves early in the third frame before Schoen stole the ball from the Pioneer defense and outraced them to the goal before slipping a shot by Chebookjian to make the score, 2-0, with 1:46 left before the final break. The Pioneer offense came alive in the final quarter and forced Bomboy to make three of her eight saves but WestConn kept them off the board the rest of the way. Chebookjian finished with nine saves for the Pioneers.
