DANBURY, Conn. - Three different players scored as the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team raced past visiting non-conference opponent Russell Sage College, 3-0, under a hazy super moon at the Westside Athletic Complex on Tuesday night.
With its second shutout victory of the season, the Wolves improved to 5-2-1 overall while the Gators sank to 1-3-2. WestConn dominated play to finish ahead in shots, 19-7, and corner kicks, 7-2.
After nearly tickling the twine in the first minute of action, the hosts got on the board 8:28 into play when senior forward
Adriana Alfano (New Milford, Conn.) rushed in alone to rip a low shot to the corner after senior forward
Suzana Imetovski (Seymour, Conn.) threaded a pass thru a pair of defenders to make it 1-0.
Junior backer
Kaylee Tackson (Thompson, Conn.) blasted a shot from 20 yards away that floated between the cross bar and the outstretched arms of Russell Sage sophomore keeper Olivia Horan (Mechanicville, N.Y.) less than four minutes later, extending the advantage to 2-0. The lead would stand at halftime.
The Gators attempted a rally early in the second stanza but Wolves sophomore netminder
Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J) was up to the task. She recorded five saves en route to blanking the visitors and earning the win. Junior midfielder
Hannah Blacher (Allendale,N.J.) rounded the count out at 3-0 in the 67th minute when she faked the initial free-kick attempt, wound up and then unleashed a blast around the wall and into the back of the net from just outside the box.
The Wolves will look to build on the momentum when they host Keene State on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Little East Conference opener for both teams.
