NEWPORT, R.I. - Junior
Sophia Onek (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute to lead the visiting Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against the Salve Regina University Seahawks on Reynolds Field Saturday afternoon. WestConn improves to 4-2-1 while the Seahawks fall to 0-6. The Wolves will host Sage next on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Junior
Emily Farrell (Westhampton, N.Y.) assisted senior
Adriana Alfano (New Milford, Conn.) on the other WestConn goal, while goalies
Ashlyn Flood (Stamford, Conn.) and
Gracen Regan (Monroe, N.J.) combined for nine Wolves saves.
Alfano's goal in the ninth minute gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead and Flood made her six saves in the first half to keep Salve Regina off the board until intermission. The Seahawks tied the contest in the 64th minute on a tally by Sydney Giampapa and Seahawk goalie Reagan Moffat made a save against Farrell moments later. WestConn was awarded a penalty kick on a Salve Regina yellow card that Onek drilled home for the clincher. Wolves sophomore
Jasmine Islami (Bethel, Conn.) and senior
Mackenzie Sam (Brookfield, Conn.) were both denied by Moffat in the closing minutes to keep the Seahawks within a goal, but WestConn defense did not yield a shot over final 12 minutes. WestConn outshot Salve Regina, 23-17, and Moffat finished with five saves.
