CHICOPEE, Mass. - Juniors Miah Ruiz (New Fairfield, Conn.) and Regan Schoen (Newtown, Conn.) erupted to guide the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team to a 10-1 victory at non-conference opponent Elms College on Sunday at Leary Field. Ruiz netted a hat trick and one assist, while Schoen tallied two goals while handing out a pair of assists. 

As the score indicated, it was all Wolves. They finished with 22 shots while limiting the hosts to just one. WestConn rookie Andrea Moulton (Stafford Springs, Conn.) got in on the action with a scoring strike and one helper, while classmate Jaelyn Moulton (Stafford Springs, Conn.) and sophomore Alyssa Montalvo (Farmingville, N.Y.) each got on the board with a goal.

The visitors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. Ruiz ignited the flurry before Schoen found the back of the cage, unassisted, late in the quarter. Nina Bourassa broke up the shutout for Elms early in the second stanza. The Wolves continued to pounce on the hosts after halftime. They canned three goals in the third quarter before adding another trio in the fourth. Ruiz wrapped up the barrage at 10-1 with just under three minutes remaining to capture the hat trick.

With the win, WestConn improved to 2-0 overall while Elms dropped to 0-1. The Wolves return to action for their third straight road game to open the season when they head to Western New England University for a non-league matchup on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
