WestConn Softball Sweeps Keene State

DANBURY, Conn. - Senior RHP Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinville, Mass.) picked up a win and a save in the circle and junior Carly Cordova (East Haven, Conn.) went 5-for-8 at the plate with two doubles, four runs, and three RBIs to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 7/8-4/1 doubleheader sweep against the visiting Keene State College Owls in Little East Conference (LEC) softball action this afternoon at Westside Field.  WestConn improves to 10-12 overall and 2-2 in the Little East and will visit Mount St. Mary next on Thursday at 4 p.m.  The Owls drop to 4-14 overall and 0-2 in the league.

WestConn took advantage of two Keene State errors to take a 3-0 lead after the first inning of the opener.  Cordova led off the first with a single and advanced to third on one Owl error before scoring on a squeeze bunt by freshman Kendall Allen (Naugatuck, Conn.) that saw Keene State catcher Elyse Picard drop the ball while trying to tag Cordova at the plate.  Allen came around to score later in the first on a groundout by Wolves graduate student SS Charline Plasczynski (Bristol, Conn.).  Keene State scored an unearned run in the second frame, but WestConn took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second thanks to doubles by Cordova and senior Rachael Ushka (Southbury, Conn.).

The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth inning when Chenoweth singled and scored on a wild pitch and Cordona singled home two more runs to make the score, 7-2, in the home team's favor.  Picard doubled home two runs for the Owls in the seventh, but Chenoweth finished her second inning of relief work with no further damage to collect her second save in three days.  WestConn freshman starter Lindsay Farinacchio (Red Hook, N.Y.) improved to 6-4, allowing five hits and one walk with two strikeouts over five innings.  Lilah Demmy went the distance and dropped to 2-8 for Keene State.  Junior OF Brianna Malvino (Glen Cove, N.Y.) was 2-for3 offensively for the Wolves, while Picard, Grace Wallace and Molly Murray each had two hits for the Owls.

In the second game, Chenoweth tossed a six-hitter without a walk or a strikeout to earn her first win of the spring (1-5).  WestConn scored twice in the second inning on a single by Allen, who scored on a wild pitch, a pair of walks and a two-out, RBI double by Chenoweth.  Liv Whittier gave the Owls their first run with an RBI single in the third frame, but the Wolves answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.  Cordova and Plasczynski both singled and scored and Malvino had a two-run double in the third.  The Wolves put three more runs on the board in the fourth thanks to an RBI double by Cordova and run-scoring singles by Allen and Plasczynski to go ahead, 8-1.  Emma Chenette took the loss and Wallace had two more hits for the Owls.
