BOSTON, Mass. - The Western Connecticut State University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at UMass Boston in Little East Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Wolves fell in the opener, 8-1, before being downed in the second matchup, 4-0.
The Beacons led off the day with a homer over the center field wall and would not look back. They notched a four-run second inning before widening the gap to 6-0. WestConn got on the board when junior
Carly Cordova (East Haven, Conn.) came around to score on an infield error after leading the frame off with a walk. The Beacon's starting pitcher surrendered just two hits while striking out 12 WestConn batters to earn the victory.
It was a similar story in Game Two as the Wolves squared off against another stellar pitcher. WestConn senior infielder
Rachael Ushka (Southbury, Conn.) smacked the lone hit of the game for the Wolves to break up the Beacons' no-hit bid.
With the pair of losses, WestConn moved to 10-14 overall and 2-4 in league play, while UMass Boston improved to 18-6 and 4-2. The Wolves will look to rebound when they host an LEC twin bill against UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday.
