WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Freshman Lindsay Farinacchio (Red Hook, N.Y.) and senior
Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinville, Mass.) combined on a two-hitter to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 4-1 victory over the University of Saint Joseph Blue Jays in softball action this afternoon at USJ Softball Field. WestConn, which dropped the second game, 3-2, is now 8-12 with another twinbill tomorrow against SUNY Purchase. St. Joseph (Conn.) moves to 5-13. The Wolves were the home team for both games on St. Joseph's turf due to a wet field in Danbury. Chenoweth also went 3-for-6 at the plate with a double, an RBI, and a stolen base in the two games.
WestConn took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game one on a two-run single by
Charline Plasczynski (Bristol, Conn.). The Blue Jays scored an unearned run in the third frame before the Wolves rallied for two more runs in the fourth thanks to RBI doubles by Farinacchio and Chenoweth. The Blue Jays got just one hit and Farinacchio got around four walks and three Wolves errors to collect her fifth win, striking out two in four innings. Chenoweth faced 10 batters in her three innings, surrendering just a single hit and collecting her first save of the spring. Alyssa Roberts went the distance and allowed six hits but dropped to 1-5 for St. Joseph.
WestConn went ahead early again in the nightcap, scoring twice in the first inning. Senior Rachaek Ushka (Southbury, Conn.), freshman
Kendall Allen (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Plasczynski delivered consecutive singles with Ushka scoring on Plasczysnki's third RBI of the day, while Allen scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore
Alexis Resto (Shelton, Conn.). St. Joseph starter Paige Fekete settled down, however, and was not scored upon the rest of the way. The Blue Jays doubled three times in the third inning to tie the score off Wolves rookie starter Caitlin Conley (Ridgefield, Conn.) and took a 3-2 lead on an unearned run against Farinacchio in the sixth. WestConn put two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, but could not tie the score. Farinacchio did not allow an earned run over the last four innings but dropped to 5-4. Fekete improved to 4-3 with help from Roberts who was 3-for-3 with two doubles at the plate in game two.
