Max Grewal (Long Beach, N.Y.) allowed three earned runs with six strikeouts over seven innings but suffered a hard-luck loss against the visiting Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors in Little East Conference (LEC) baseball action this afternoon on Westside Field. WestConn falls to 5-25 overall and 1-3 in the Little East, while the No. 25-ranked Warriors drop to 24-11 overall and 11-3 in the league. Ryan Vallie (East Haven, Conn.) both went 2-for-4 for the WestConn offense.
WestConn fell behind, 2-0, after two innings when Mason Ballmer had a two-run single for the Warriors. Eastern Connecticut added an unearned run in the third frame, added a run in the fourth, and scored two more unearned runs in the sixth inning. The Wolves put two runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth, putting together four singles in the inning including a run-scoring hit to right field by junior C Nick Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.). Jayson Hannah (Staten Island, N.Y.) had the lone WestConn hits after the sixth and sophomore reliever
Kenneth Firlings (Middletown, R.I.) tossed two scoreless innings to close the game for the Wolves. Grewal scattered nine hits and fell to 1-5. Nick Furino improved to 5-0, winning in relief as one of five Warrior pitchers who struck out 14 Wolves.
