PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior 1B
Rachael Ushka (Southbury, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, including the game-winning two-run single in the eighth inning, to lead the visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves to a 10-8 win over the Plymouth State University Panthers in Little East Conference (LEC) softball action this afternoon at D&M Park. WestConn, which lost the first game of today's doubleheader, 5-3, is now 12-16 overall and 4-6 in the LEC. Plymouth State moves to 9-17 overall and 1-7 in the league. The Wolves will visit conference rival Eastern Connecticut next on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
The second game went into an extra frame after the Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score at 8-8. Junior
Amber Roggendorf (Great Neck, N.Y.) singled with one out and classmate
Carly Cordova (East Haven, Conn.) followed with a fielder's choice but a runner was thrown out at home. After a wild pitch, Ushka singled to left field and both runners scored to give the visitors a 10-8 lead. WestConn senior RHP
Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinville, Mass.) tossed a perfect ninth to improve to 3-6.
WestConn had struck first with a run in the top of the first inning when freshman 2B
Kendall Allen (Naugatuck, Conn.) doubled and scored on a hit by graduate SS
Charline Plasczynski (Bristol, Conn.). The Wolves added three more runs in the third, including two on a triple by Plasczynski, and two more in the fourth to make the score, 6-2. After yielding three runs in the fifth frame, sophomore
Alexis Resto (Shelton, Conn.) delivered a two-out, two-run single to make it, 8-5. The score remained the same until Plymouth's three-run seventh. Plasczynski finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Allen, Cordova, Resto and Ushka had two hits apiece.
In game one, WestConn built a 3-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Resto in the first, an RBI single by Allen in the third, and an RBI single by Plasczynski in the fifth. Freshman hurler Lindsay Farinacchio (Red Hook, N.Y.) did not allow a runner past second base through four innings, escaped the fifth without a run, but gave up four of five Panther runs in the sixth to fall to 6-7. She allowed just six hits and struck out three through 5.1 innings. Plasczynski was 3-for-4 with a double for the WestConn offense.
