CASTLETON, Vt. - Senior
Connor Gannon (New Milford, Conn.) threw a seven hitter with six strikeouts but came up short in a 4-0 loss to the Vermont State University Castleton Spartans in Little East Conference (LEC) baseball action this afternoon. WestConn also lost the second game of the doubleheader against the Spartans, 10-9, despite a furious comeback that saw the Wolves score six runs in the last four innings. WestConn falls to 4-22 overall and 0-12 in the LEC and Castleton improves to 5-25 overall and 2-7 in the league. The Wolves host conference rival Rhode Island College next on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
Aubrey Ramey outdueled Gannon in the opener, tossing a seven-hit shutout with four K's and a one walk. Junior
Nicholas Moeller (Mahopac, N.Y.) had two hits for WestConn in the game. Castleton led, 4-0, early in the second game before freshman
Richard Salonia (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a two-run single and classmate
Bryan Birkl (Farmingdale, N.Y.) added a run-scoring hit to drive home Salonia and make it a one-run game. The Spartans answered with four runs in the fourth, however.
In the sixth inning, senior
Jesse Dunn (Bedford, N.Y.) belted a two-run double and Moeller had a two-RBI single to cut the visitors' deficit back to one again. WestConn freshman reliever
Brian Mansfield (Lynbrook, N.Y.) was kept the game close with 3.1 innings of work and no earned runs with two K's but Castleton scored an unearned run in the seventh to make the score, 9-7. Birkl singled and scored on a single by sophomore
Peter Coniglio (New Milford, Conn.) in the eighth but Castleton scored their 10th run in the bottom of the inning. WestConn rallied for another run in the ninth on a leadoff single by Moeller, a hit by junior
Anthony Piazza (Lynbrook, N.Y.), a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI grounder by rookie
Ryan Vallie (East Haven, Conn.). Castleton retired the final out of the game on a strikeout with the tying run on base.
