PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The visiting Western Connecticut State University Wolves lost both games of their Little East Conference (LEC) softball doubleheader against the Rhode Island College Achorwomen, 10-5/3/4, this afternoon at Dayne Bazar Field. WestConn falls to 7-11 overall and 0-2 in the Little East, while the Anchorwomen improve to 14-2 overall and 2-0 in the league. Senior
Rachael Ushka (Southbury, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two steals in game two for the Wolves. WestConn returns home for two games against SUNY Purchase on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Rhode Island College jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener and led, 9-0, after four frames. WestConn senior
Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinville, Mass.) tripled to drive in one of three runs for the visitors in the fifth inning to keep the game from ending early. Brianna Bailey, who finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, homered in the sixth for the Anchorwomen's 10th run. Chenoweth started and last five innings in the circle, allowing seven hits and four earned runs with a strikeout and two walks and falling to 0-5. Abby Kidd improved to 8-0 for Rhode Island College, tossing a three-hitter with 10 K's.
Charline Plasczynski (Bristol, Conn.) and
Brianna Malvino (Glen Cove, N.Y.) had the other WestConn hits.
In the second game, the Wolves came back from a 5-2 deficit and trailed by a run with two runners in scoring position in the sixth but could not push the tying run across. Rookie RHP
Lindsay Farinaccio (Red Hook, N.Y.) went the distance for WestConn, allowing five hits and five runs with five strikeouts and three walks but drops to 4-3. Taylor Babcock earned the win for the Anchorwomen and Kidd pitched a perfect seventh to record a save. Malvino joined Ushka with two hits for the Wolves offense.
WestConn struck first in the nightcap when freshman
Kendall Allen (Naugatuck, Conn.) drove home Ushka with a double and later scored on an error but the inning ended prematurely on a double play. Rhode Island College scored once in the second and added four in the third including three on a home run by Melanie Earley. Malvino singled with two outs in the fourth inning and scored on a Chenoweth double. Ushka doubled, stole third, and scored on a wild throw in the fifth inning to make the score, 5-4. In the sixth, sophomore
Alexis Resto (Shelton, Conn.) and Malvino walked but the Anchorwomen got two runners out at the plate on the same play to end the threat.
