DANBURY, Conn. - Senior 1B Rachael Uska (Southbury, Conn.) went 4-for-4 with a double, a home run, and four RBIs to lead the Western Connecticut State University Wolves to an 11-1 win over the visiting St. Joseph's Brooklyn Bears in softball action this afternoon at Westside Field. WestConn, which dropped the second game, 9-3, in the second game of its home-opening doubleheader, is now 7-7. St. Joseph's move to 4-4. Freshman RHP
Lindsay Farinaccio (Red Hook, N.Y.) tossed a five-hitter in the mercy-rule shortened, five-inning game for the Wolves. WestConn will visit Farmingdale State next in a 3:30 p.m. twinbill on Monday.
WestConn scored in every inning of game one and Ushka ended the contest with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning with a three-run blast over the left field fence to push the Wolves lead from seven to 10 and activate the eight-run mercy rule. The Wolves pounded 15 hits, while Farinaccio allowed just four singles and one double with three strikeouts to improve to 4-1. Wolves junior
Carly Cordova (East Haven, Conn.) was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs, and two RBIs, and classmate
Brianna Malvino (Glen Cove, N.Y.) was 3-for-3 with a double, walk and an RBI.
St. Joseph's rebounded and scored three times in the top of the first inning of the nightcap. All three runs were unearned and eight of the Bears' nine runs in the game were unearned, as WestConn hurt itself with five errors. The Wolves score their own unearned run in the fifth inning on a squeeze bunt by Cordova. WestConn made three fielding miscues in the fifth frame and the Bears took advantage to take a 6-1 lead. Malvino delivered a two-out, two run single in the bottom of the fifth to cut the home team's deficit to three, but St. Joseph's scored two more unearned runs in the sixth and added the game's final run in the seventh. Malvino and junior
Amber Roggendorf (Great Neck, N.Y.) each had two hits for the Wolves offense, while senior starter
Sydney Chenoweth (Baldwinsville, Mass.) dropped to 0-4 despite not allowing an earned run over 5.1 inning of work. Makena Burr yielded seven hits in a complete-game effort and Autumn Poppett had two hits and two RBIs for the Bears.
