DANBURY, Conn. - Despite a game-high four points (two goals, two assists) from sophomore midfielder
Tristan McMahon (Farmingville, N.Y.), the Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team suffered a 13-8 loss to visiting non-league foe Trinity College on Wednesday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex. Both teams are receiving votes in the current New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Division III Poll.
Junior attackman
Julian Duque (Mastic, N.Y.) added a hat trick for the Wolves while graduate student attackman
Tyler Starrett (Redding, Conn.) chipped in with a pair of scoring strikes.
Four different players netted two goals apiece for the Bantams, while senior attackman Andrew Bailey (Madison, N.J.) dished out a game-high three assists.
Trinity fired 56 shots while WestConn finished with 31. The Bantams also won the ground ball battle, 33-15.
The Wolves got off to a sluggish start as they trailed 4-0 early in the second quarter. However, they came roaring back to close the gap to 5-4 at halftime when McMahon dodged a defender and tickled the twine.
He picked up right where he left off in the third quarter, notching his fifth goal of the campaign, knotting the count at 5-5. But the Bantams answered with a four goal run to regain the advantage early in the fourth. WestConn countered with goals from Duque, his team-leading 21st of the season - and Starrett, shrinking the deficit to 9-7. However, the visitors retaliated with yet another four goal flurry to put any hopes of a WestConn rally to rest. Graduate student
Benjamin Hawthorne (Manorville, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring with his ninth goal of the year for the hosts.
Wolves senior goalkeeper
Brendan Grove (Cheshire, Conn.) stopped 13 shots and took the loss, while Trinity junior netminder Jordan Opdahl (Rockville, Md.) recorded 13 saves and earned the win.
WestConn saw its four-game win streak come to a conclusion and moved to 4-2 overall. The Bantams earned their first win, improving to 1-3. The Wolves will look to get back to their winning ways when they host Farmingville State in a non-conference contest next Wednesday night.
