Sophomore guard Tommy Whelan (Bronx, N.Y.) paced the Huskies with 25 points, while rookie guard Brady Saunders (Brewer, ME) and senior guard Chance Dixon (Lake Worth, FL) tacked on 15 and 12, respectively.Â
WestConn dominated the boards with a 43-28 edge. They also finished the day connecting on 8-of-17 shots from beyond-the-arc, good for a 47 percent showing. They held the visitors to just a 6-of-25 (24 percent) clip.Â
The hosts drew first blood with an early 8-0 spurt. Stokes put the finishing touches on the run, sinking a pair of free throws. The Wolves widened the gap to 34-19 midway thru the first half when Belcher muscled home a layup. They would hold a 35-28 advantage heading into the locker room at the break.
The winners would hold off the pesky Huskies in the second half. Young tickled the twine with a trifecta midway thru the period, stretching the lead to 20 points before Southern Maine countered, trimming the deficit to 10. However, they couldn't get the advantage within single digits and WestConn outlasted them with strong tenacity on the glass, while using defensive pressure.Â
