DANBURY, Conn. - Senior center
Gabrielle Franks (Madison, Conn.) tallied team-highs of 14 points and nine rebounds, while classmate guard
Nicole Vivian (New Milford, Conn.) added 10 points and eight boards as the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team fell to visiting UMass Dartmouth, 71-49, in a Little East Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.
With the loss, the Wolves concluded the season at 7-18 overall and 3-13 in league play. The Corsairs - currently receiving votes in the D3Hoops.com national poll - improved to 22-3 overall and 14-2 in conference play. They head to the LEC Postseason Championship Tournament slated to begin on Tuesday.
Junior guard Amaris Mills (Roxbury, Mass.) paced the visitors with a game-high 23 points which included seven shots from beyond-the-arc. Senior guard Kaylin Zalewski (Johnston, R.I.) and classmate guard Teja Andrews (Plymouth, Mass.) chipped in with 13 and 11, respectively.
The winners shot a scorching 50% from three-point territory, while the hosts managed just 18 percent. The Corsair reserves outscored the Wolves bench, 30-12, largely in part because of Mills.
WestConn got off to a strong start when junior guard
Nicole Peralta (North Windham, Conn.) buried a trifecta in the first quarter, giving the hosts a 7-6 lead. However, the Corsairs stormed back to capture an 11-7 lead heading into the second. They stretched it 37-21 at halftime. The Wolves were unable to close the gap in the second half.
Franks, Vivian,
Maggie Nardini (Sandwich, Mass.) and
Sydney Craig (Waterbury, Conn.) were each honored before the game on Senior Day. After a timeout in the waning seconds, Franks nearly connected on a dramatic three-point attempt from the right wing.
The Wolves will seek to move in a strong and positive direction next season.
