DANBURY, Conn. – The top-seeded Western Connecticut State University men's soccer team downed visiting fifth-seeded Plymouth State University, 4-1, in the Little East Conference Championship semifinals on Thursday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.
The Wolves extended their win streak to eight straight games over the Panthers. Plymouth's last win came against visiting WestConn back in 2015. The Panthers have not won at the WAC since 2014. With the victory, the Wolves improved to 15-4-2 and will host the Little East Conference Championship matchup against visiting third-seeded Rhode Island College on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Anchormen edged No. 2 UMass Boston on penalty kicks after a scoreless overtime session in the other semifinal contest.
The hosts got things started less than 27 minutes into the contest when junior forward
Kamal Sabar (Brooklyn, N.Y.) fired home his eighth goal of the season when he took a cross from senior backer
George Cortes (Fairfield, Conn.) and booted a shot into the open side of the twine. Shortly thereafter, WestConn widened the gap to 2-0 when senior forward
Maximus Vigo (Canton, Mich.) gathered a rebound and tapped the ball inside the right post. They would hold the advantage at halftime.
The Panthers sliced the gap to 2-1 midway through the second half when they ripped a corner kick that a WestConn player accidentally sent into the back of its own net. The Wolves went back up by two when Vigo connected on his second scoring strike of the game when he took a long feed from rookie midfielder
Nicola Acocella (Harrison, N.Y.) and chipped a shot in from five yards out. Moments later, Vigo dribbled in on a breakaway attempt and blasted a shot into the left corner to complete the hat trick and cement the 4-1 win.
The Wolves will seek to capture the LEC crown along with an automatic berth into the NCAA Championship Tournament on Saturday.
